Dementia carers in crisis

Charity Dementia Carers Count have released the results of their fourth annual survey into dementia carers’ lives and needs.

Results are upsetting, with four in five dementia carers reaching crisis, and nearly three-quarters often feeling like they cannot continue to care.

The charity says that this is not surprising “in view of the many challenges carers are contending with, and in view of the fact that only one in two dementia carers have access to support.”

Dementia Carers Count comment: “It doesn’t have to be this way. Dementia carers know what would make a difference to them. A big priority for carers is to have a single point of contact to help them access the support they need – whether this is practical or emotional.”

The survey findings will be shared with decision makers and policy makers across the UK to make sure the needs of dementia carers are fully understood by everyone involved in deciding what care and support will be available in future.
